Brushing, flossing, and good nutrition —when combined with regular twice-yearly dental visits — are the keys to the prevention of gum disease. If you are elderly, and it's hard to keep up brushing and flossing like you used to, talk to your dentist about options. An electric toothbrush is sometimes easier to hold and maneuver around the mouth, so feel free to ask us questions at your next visit.
Another condition that can affect seniors is dry mouth. Unfortunately, the side effect of many medications is dry mouth, and it can be very uncomfortable. It's important to drink a lot of water to stay hydrated. In addition, there are products we have at our office called “dry mouth drops” that help moisten your mouth.
