A common habit that often goes unnoticed is clenching and grinding of the teeth.The habit of clenching and grinding (Bruxism) is usually involuntary and most often happens subconsciously while one sleeps. As a result, many people are completely unaware it is occurring. It is also possible for clenching and grinding to occur during wakefulness. Causes can simply bestress and frustration or more severely, misaligned jaw joints and stressed muscles, ranging in severity from occasional clenching and grinding to constant nightly grinding.

If you have an active child or teen who participates in organized sports activities, it is just as important to properly protect their teeth as it is to prevent any other injuries. A mouthguard should be a standard part of your child's athletic gear from the time they begin sports activities. According to the American Dental Association, an athlete is 60 times more likely to have an injury to the mouth when not wearing a mouthguard. The mouthguard cushions impact that may otherwise cause broken teeth, jaw injuries, or cuts to the lip, tongue or face.

Why Do My Gums Bleed When I Brush or Floss My Teeth?

Bleeding of the gums can be caused by many different factors such as diabetes, dry mouth syndrome, hormonal changes during pregnancy, and tobacco or substance abuse. The vast majority of the time, however, bleeding of the gums is caused by poor oral hygiene. Failure to brush and floss properly (or not enough) can lead to plaque buildup along and under the gum line. The accumulation of plaque results in inflammation of the gums, swelling, and bleeding. This disease is called gingivitis.
