Protect your lips and face during the cold weather

Augusta ME Teeth Cleaning
Jan 28 2015

With over two feet of snow on the ground and howling winds at our doors, it's important to stay bundled up when headed outside. Your face is very vulnerable to effects of the cold weather, and your lips have some of the thinnest skin on your body. Your cheeks and lips are important players in the overall function and health of your mouth, so it's necessary to take some extra measures to protect them against the harsh repercussions of winter.

Take care of your teeth as you age

We've all heard the phrase “aging gracefully.” Your oral health is a big part of your overall health as you grow older, and, if you take care of your teeth and gums, you should be able to flash those pearly whites with confidence at any age. As you age, it is important to continue to see your Augusta dentist regularly. You can become less sensitive to dental problems, so it's a good idea to get regular dental exams so that any issues can be caught early.

Stay mouth-healthy during cold and flu season

Jan 15 2015

If you or a loved one is sick this cold and flu season, you know how important it is to keep your home sanitary. You know to disinfect your doorknobs, light switches, and faucets, but did you know that it's also recommended to disinfect your toothbrush and night guard? You use your toothbrush every day, and, if not properly cared for, it can act as a breeding ground for lots of bacteria. Remember to rinse your toothbrush after each use and then store it upright. Allow the toothbrush to air-dry; covered toothbrushes tend to foster the growth of bacteria.

The holiday season is a busy time of year, but that doesn't mean that it can't be fun and relaxed. Amidst all of the to-do lists, shopping, and cooking, find time to decompress and focus on your health. It's no secret that stress influences your overall well being. Stress can cause you to develop canker sores, clench and grind, eat poorly, and neglect your ordinary dental health routine.

Holiday shopping on the brain? An electric toothbrush makes a great gift!

Holiday Gift, Electric Toothbrush
Nov 19 2014

Don't know what to get for a loved one this holiday season? Consider giving the gift of great oral health! An electric toothbrush is a great gift idea for anyone on your shopping list this season. There are many benefits of using an electric-powered toothbrush. Many incorporate self-timers into their design which lets you know if you are brushing long enough. Remember, dental professionals recommend you brush your teeth at least two times a day for two minutes. Electric toothbrushes can also be a lot easier to use for individuals with more limited dexterity.

Don't Wait Until New Year's to Quit Smoking

Protect Your Teeth - Quit Smoking
Nov 13 2014

Fall is a great time to put an end to your smoking habit, and Capitol Dental Care can help! Smoking can create a whole host of negative effects on your health including cancer, heart disease, loss of taste and smell, and respiratory trouble. In addition to these damaging consequences, smoking can wreak havoc on your teeth. When you smoke, tar deposits are left on your teeth and these attract bacterial plaque. This plaque builds up and can cause periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is the number one cause of tooth loss.

Planning your Thanksgiving menu? Keep this in mind

Nov 05 2014

Capitol Dental Care knows that Thanksgiving provides a great time to connect with loved ones over a home-cooked meal. For many families, it is common to graze for a few hours before the main course is served. When you're snacking on Thanksgiving, remember to keep your oral health in mind. Between the frequent snacks and high sugar content of many traditional treats, the holiday can leave your teeth vulnerable to the early process of decay.

A bottle of soda or fruit juice has about 16 teaspoons of sugar. Researchers at John Hopkins University conducted a study, now published in the American Journal of Public Health, that involved the placement of signs in convenience stores that displayed key facts about the caloric and sugar content of juice and soft drinks. Such facts were posed in questions like, “Did you know a bottle of soda or fruit juice takes approximately 50 minutes of running to burn off?” and “Did you know that working off a bottle of soda or fruit juice takes about 5 miles of walking?"

They stress the importance of brushing twice a day for two minutes, flossing every day, rinsing with mouthwash, and chewing sugar-free gum.

In a study outlined by Dental Tribune International, more than 1,000 U.S. citizens from across the country participated in a survey about their oral health. The results? About 50% of respondents expressed satisfaction with their oral health. However, the survey results also suggested that those who visited their dentist at least once a year reported higher satisfaction with their oral health and felt more well overall than those who rarely visited the dentist.
